CEO Gloria L. Blackwell in conversation with ��ɫ American Fellowship alumna Tamika Nunley, Ph.D., as they discuss her recent book, “The Demands of Justice: Enslaved Women, Capital Crime, and Clemency in Early Virginia,” 1662-1865. This book examines clemency in legal cases that involve enslaved women accused of capital crime in early Virginia. In these legal encounters, we not only see a system that worked to define and affirm a commitment to legal paternalism that upheld the rule of law, but decades of responses made by the countless enslaved women accused of capital offenses. “The Demands of Justice” examines how these responses constituted the makings of an intellectual history of enslaved women’s articulations of justice.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime marks July 30 as World Day Against Trafficking in Persons to raise awareness and strengthen global efforts for the prevention and elimination of human trafficking. This year’s theme, “Reach every victim of trafficking, leave no one behind,” centers survivors in these efforts. Tune into ��ɫ’s Chief Executive Officer Gloria L. Dr. Karen Cook Bell is Associate Professor of History and the Wilson H. Elkins Endowed Professor at Bowie State University. Her areas of specialization include slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and women’s history. Running from Bondage was a finalist for the Pauli Murray Book Prize for Best Book in African American Intellectual History. It tells the compelling stories of enslaved women, who comprised one-third of all runaways, and the ways in which they fled or attempted to flee bondage during and after the Revolutionary War. Dr. Karen Cook Bell’s enlightening and original contribution to the study of slave resistance in eighteenth-century America explores the individual and collective lives of these women and girls of diverse circumstances, while also providing details about what led them to escape.

��ɫ is helping girls and women in innovation and technology worldwide. Despite the importance of access to equipment and skills, gender stereotypes and biases still hinder their progress. At their event parallel to the 67th UN Commission on the Status of Women, ��ɫ provided strategies for closing the gender digital divide.

Dr. Blain discusses her most recent book Until I Am Free: Fannie Lou Hamer’s Enduring Message to America, a riveting biography and intellectual history of Black activist Fannie Lou Hamer. A blend of social commentary, biography, and intellectual history, Until I Am Free is a manifesto for anyone committed to social justice. The book challenges us to listen to a working-poor and disabled Black woman activist and intellectual of the civil rights movement as we grapple with contemporary concerns around race, inequality, and social justice. Award-winning historian and New York Times best-selling author situates Fannie Lou Hamer as a key political thinker alongside leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks and demonstrates how her ideas remain salient for a new generation of activists committed to dismantling systems of oppression in the United States and across the globe.

Through a conversation between Dr. Ashanté Reese and Dr. Farmer, they realized that, other than asking for more, they did not know how to negotiate or what the landscape of possibilities looked like when in job negotiations. Their survey results offer a step in the right direction to create a more open and collective approach to academic job negotiations.

In our first virtual town hall of 2021, members had the opportunity to hear from ��ɫ’s nationally elected National Board chair and members of the Racial and Social Justice Working Group and be a part of breakout groups where we discussed the recent clash at the United States Capitol, implications for our ongoing racial equity work and the vote to open membership this spring.
