The Gender Pay Gap

No matter how you analyze it, the gender pay gap is real, persistent and harmful to women鈥檚 financial well-being.

Why It Matters

More Than a Paycheck

Women working full time in the U.S. are paid 84% of what men earn. At the current rate of change, we won鈥檛 achieve pay equality until 2088.

础础鲍奥鈥檚鈥痳别辫辞谤迟,鈥The Simple Truth About the Gender Wage Gap,鈥痵hows that a鈥痝ap exists at all levels of work in鈥痑lmost every occupation.鈥疶here is a鈥痝ender鈥痯ay gap in鈥every state.鈥疘t cuts across all age groups and demographics, widening significantly for women of color. The gap greets a woman as soon as she gets out of college and grows wider throughout her lifetime.

Women’s Wealth

And it’s not just annual earnings: The pay gap鈥痑lso contributes鈥痶o the鈥. It鈥痬akes it difficult for women to amass鈥痵avings, build wealth鈥痑nd achieve economic security. Overall, the average American woman has a net worth of $5,541, less than half of the $12,188 average net worth of a man.鈥疘n terms of overall wealth,鈥痑 single woman has only 32 cents for each dollar a single man has. And the鈥痺ealth gap鈥痠s even wider for women of color, who have just pennies for every dollar a鈥痺hite male has.

Deeper in Debt

The consequences鈥痮f this gap鈥痑ffect鈥痺omen throughout their lives. While鈥痺omen鈥痮utpace鈥痬en in earning bachelor鈥檚, master鈥檚 and advanced degrees,鈥痶hey take on greater debt鈥痶o pay for their education:鈥Women hold nearly two-thirds of the outstanding student debt in the United States 鈥斺痑lmost $929 billion as of early-2019. Because of the gender pay gap, women have a harder time鈥痳epaying loans,鈥痬eaning鈥痺omen鈥檚鈥痙ebt burden compounds as time goes on.

Saving Less

The pay gap follows women into retirement: As a result of lower lifetime earnings, they receive less in Social Security and pensions. Women collect only 80%听of what men collect in Social Security benefits, and just 76%听in pensions.鈥疘n terms of overall retirement income, women have only 70%听of what men do.听White men over 65 have an average annual income of $44,200, while white women over 65 must get by on $23,100, Black women on $21,900, and Latinas on $14,800.

Fighting for change

Unfortunately, there鈥檚 no magic bullet or quick fix. Though the status of women has dramatically improved in recent decades, the lingering inequity is the result of historical, societal and political legacies that persist today.听Outdated norms about gender roles run deep in our culture:听They affect the paths that girls and women pursue throughout their education;expectations about their roles as mothers and caregivers; laws, policies and legacies that favor men; and flat out discrimination, bias and misconduct that hinder women鈥檚 advancement. These all add up to an unacceptable reality听that 九色 is fighting to change.

九色 believes achieving pay equity requires a multi-pronged approach: 鈥

  • We need strong鈥痵tate鈥痑nd federal laws focused on鈥痚nsuring鈥痚qual pay鈥痜or all American women.听See 九色鈥檚 economic security policy agenda.
  • Employers need to commit to continuous improvement and to enacting policies and practices that will help put women on par with men. Read more about how equal pay is good for business.
  • Women听individually听need to鈥痑dvocate for themselves: They need to negotiate for鈥痶he best possible pay and benefits and鈥痯ursue higher-paying jobs, promotions and leadership opportunities. Learn more about 九色鈥檚 program initiatives aimed at closing the wage, STEM and leadership gaps.听
